STREB, the seminal, Williamsburg-based acrobatic company, celebrates summer in Brooklyn with Invisible Forces, which combines the thrills of the circus and the velocity of the Indy 500 in one Action event. The show features STREB's new Action Platform, a 20-foot, rotating floor; the España Whizzing Gizmo; and the two-dimensional vertical pipe grid, Airlines. The result is a singular spectacle in which beautiful bodies engage with sexy hardware, exemplifying what The Village Voice recently said of the company: "Streb's unique movement art-kin to sport, circus, physics experiment, and hard labor-has reached a peak of theatricality and dare-all virtuosity."

To commemorate Henry Hudson sailing into these parts 400 years ago, the annual extravaganza moves westward. Fireworks will be set off from six barges along the Hudson River between 24th and 50th Streets; the show will last about 26 minutes. The New York Pops will play an inspirational set, including “God Bless America” and "Proud Mary," which will be broadcast on NBC and 1010 WINS.

Hudson Terrace

Pier 66
The Frying Pan, a sunken Coast Guard ship turned bar, is one of the coolest (and thematically appropriate) vantage points to see the night’s aerial magic. While the barge itself will be closed to the public due to security concerns, the North River Historic Ship Society is throwing a private party on the roof of the attached Pier 66 from 7 to 10:30pm. The price is steep ($200), but it’s hard to get closer (or classier). Pier 66, Twelfth Ave at 26th St (212-989-6363, nrhss.org)

The Rusty Knot
Get things started around noon at this would-be dive bar, which features the Uncle Sam Special: 25¢ Busch beers served until 5pm. Opening Tonight! Twelfth Night!

There are few things more traditional to a NY summer than The Public Theater's Shakespeare in the Park. Two shows over the summer take place in the magnificence of the delecorte theater in central park and it's truly always a magical experience.

First up, technically opening tonight and running through July 12th, is 12th night. One of Shakespeare's comedies about a cross dressing woman and the faults of love and gender (how appropriate for gay pride week!) it's a fun show with an allstar cast. (Anne Hathaway for the general population, Raul Esparza, Julie White and Audra MacDonald for theater geeks like me.)

I went this past Tuesday and the show was lovely lovely lovely. Not stand out (read my post about romeo and juliet from a few years ago) but there are a ton of laughs and it's overall delightful. The rolling hillside side sets the scene perfectly and everyone holds up their parts quite well, the singing parts are a total delight and keep your ears peeled for a See You Next Tuesday joke! And honestly, I swoon just sitting in that theater under the stars with the castle in the background, you just can't beat it!

You can also bring anything you like to munch or drink upon in the theater (provided no glass bottles are there!) I highly recommend a nice spread of wine and cheese (Thanks Ben's friend Gerrit with nice eyes!) Shakespeare would appreciate.

So, you may be asking, but LA, how do I get to experience this wonder? Well my friends, there are three ways.

1) buy expensive tickets and become a member (ha! not free and cheap!)
2) wait in line

This is the traditional way folks. Every day when there is a show (Tue-Sunday, 8pm) hundreds upon hundreds are given out for free to those able and willing to wait for hours upon hours to be bestowed with a golden ticket into the gates. Tickets are given out at 1pm at both the delecorte theater (which I love because you get to wait in the park) a short five minute walk into the park from the 82nd street path entrance or at the public theater in greenwich village. I got there at 8 30 am on a Tuesday and was fine but once press picks up I would recommend getting there by 7am for weekends and 8am for weekdays to be safe. Brings blankets and cushions (they blocked off the grass so sadly Ben, my partner in crime, and my butts were quite sore) and food and drink. They have finally opened up a cafe for food but you can always order from the amazing Andy's, the guys guarding the line has the number!

NOTE: If you are waiting in line, people are CRAZY! You can't have friends join you, you can't really leave. Even if the people around you seem cool someone in the back once told on me because my friend showed up 1/2 hour I got there. So you never know

BUT you do get 2 tkts per person, so that is fun!

3. Virtual Line!

OBSESSED: High Line Park

Words cannot express how in love I am with the brand-spankin new High Line park running along an elevated railroad track from Gansevort to 20th street (and getting expanded this summer and in the future). Here are the reasons

1) It's in the sky! As you walk the paths you feel like you're discovering a magical hidden world. Peeking into broken windows, watching cars fly below you, with amazing views of the hudson, it's a whole new way to see the incredible NYC!

2) It's beyond gorgeous. I want to kiss all the architects and landscapers who designed this place. It is the perfect blend of modern twists and old school park fun. The sleek lines of the benches combined with flowers growing from the preserved tracks and lovely old school stones that remind me of the type I would find back home in MA

3) the sundeck chairs. brilliant! Though I am sure they will most always be snagged, I can't think of a better place to soak in the sun (well, besides grass and sand of course)

Just go already! It's nutso during the weekends now but on a weekday afternoon? Perfect!

There are millions of listserves giving you the lowdown on everything to do in the city but lately I've been digging the male-focused "Urban Daddy". Aside from their often sexist images (which may be reason enough to boycott, but then I'd boycott practically everything in the city) they actually have a good range of interesting activities, restaurants, and shops in the city.

They don't specifically let you know about cheap events, however if you become a member you get "perks" which include discount codes at zipcar, massage packages, and free drinks. For example, if you head to the frying pan on Saturday the first 100 people to mention Urban Daddy at 3pm get a free round of Coronas.

Mermaid Parade!

Probably one of the craziest parades in NYC, this hours long fest taking place on Coney island features hundreds and hundreds of mermaids and other sea-folk. Child mermaids, painted mermaids, naked mermaids, it's just amazing! If the weather clears up I will most definitely be there, see some pictures from a few years ago attached.

Hint: Bring water and food and sit down below the barriers to get a good spot. The parade lasts sooo long (more mermaids join every year!) so you may want to bring something to sit on as well. PLUS after the parade you can enjoy the crazy/beautiful shores of coney island beach.

In case you're looking for outdoorsy old school classic NY fun this summer there's no better place than at the Bryant Park Film festival. Every Monday night great movies show at sundown, with amazing cartoons from back in the day featuring bugs bunny and the like before the show begins. Fair warning, it's one of the must-do events in NYC and the lawn opens at 5, I recommend getting there around that time if you want to grab a good spot. Just send one member from your group with a HUGE blanket to be there when the frenzy begins and you can join them later!

This summer I am mainly, sadly, stuck in Bar review class during the week and often lunch is taken over a computer. Depressing, I know, BUT it has made me realize how much I love $5 sandwiches in the city. Here are my two favorite!

1) Tortas with chicken from "the taco truck"

Ok, this is NOT their real name but I never know what is. It's the best truck food I have ever had and the guys are adorable, always serving with a smile and trying to teach me more spanish words. It's a big white truck with a green awning and a flip down aluminum siding that you can eat on. They are usually on 6th ave between 4th- 8th street or 8th ave and 14th street (where I have seen them more lately over the summer). I will try and find a number for them to call because it is so SAD when you are craving their cheese-avacado-chicken filled goodness only to discover the truck is not there!

In fact, that happened to me this evening and so with only 6 dollars in my pocket I ventured off to find something else to eat and came upon the new Vietnamese sandwich place in the village

2) Baoguette

For five bucks (5.42 with tax, thank goodness for the extra dollar) I got a HUGE sandwich on deliciously crunchy on the outside fluffy on the inside bread stuffed with seasoned and sauced pork with everything a vietnamese sandwich should be (cool and crisp and tangy and delicious). Definitely one of the best I have had in the city. Definitely will be going back!

On their website it says Murray hill but their NEW location is in the west village at 120 Christopher between Bleeker and Bedford!

This weekend is sure to rock, literally, especially if you are a fan of a little place known as Broadway.

First, HAIR
seeing as this is the 40th anniversary of a little show which premiered at The Public Theater back in the day, Joe's in the park is presenting a free concert in the incredibly gorgeous Delecorte theater in central park. Best yet, tickets are FREE (if you get in line early enough to get them!). Read my earlier posts re: Shakespeare in the park on how to get tickets and stay content while you wait in line. The too dreamy for words Johnathan Groff from Spring Awakening will be playing Claude, while I hear the next big thing to come from the cast is the breakout star, Maya Sharpe. Rock it out and save me a place in line!

The show is Sat the 22 through Monday the 24th. Show starts at 7, tickets are handed out at 1, get in line at daybreak :)

Next, Broadway Flea Market
Every year the Broadway Cares/ Equity Fights Aids hosts every (rich) theater-go-ers dream. A chance to bid on broadway prizes ranging from autographed soundtracks to real life walk on's in your favorite broadway show. AMAZING! Still fun for the rest of us cheapsters you can spend the day making donations to take pictures with your favorite celeb and oogling the goods! Some days I ask myself, where can I find glittery half naked people hula hooping on roller skates, wal mart protestors "asking" for lower wages, blow up purple octupi and an all out crazy art filled explosion? and on those days I am answered "the art parade of course!" Lucky for us it comes to town tomorrow, Saturday the 8th at 4pm. Running on West Broadway between Houston and Grand it truly is a sight to be scene (and loudly yelled into), get there early for a good spot!

Inner-city Sanctuary (literally!)

Two weeks ago I was helping out at a photo shoot at one of the best kept delightful little spots of peace in Manhattan. The General Theological Seminary.
Though it's a school for those of us more religiously inclined, it's an amazing spot with ancient buildings, towering cathedrals and plenty of green grass and chairs for those looking for a quiet respite from what is known to some as the hub of the universe. I'm not positive when it's open to visitors, ()there were a few walking through the grounds on the saturday I was there) (more research will soon be had!) but it's on 9th between 20th and 21st and the guards are quite nice, especially so if you beg a spiritual need.

The greatest love story ever told....for FREE!

Another one of summer's all too sweet perks in the city include the infamous Shakespeare in the park presented by The Public theatre. Featuring top notch in-city and imported (from hollywood that is) actors, the shows promise to be filled with big stars, breathtaking sets, and some of the best Shakespeare and classical theater this side of the Rose. Yesterday I had the (ahem) pleasure of waking up at 6am to get in line for the coveted free tickets being handed out at the Delacorte Theater in central park (where the show takes place). Arriving at 7 40 (fucking A train on the weekend) made us number 143 in line, on a Sunday and on opening night. With Scattergories, novels, Othello, cards, blankets, pillows, H and H bagels, hand fans and comic books in tow it ended up being QUITE an enjoyable six hours (thanks Zach and Linds for the great company)! Then, at 1, we were finally given the precious tickets. Our seats were actually quite good, a little off to the right and up but definitely full view, and we brought supplies (you can eat and drink (yes even wine, Shakespeare would be proud, no glass bottles though so be ready to transfer at the gate to a nalgene) in the theater! The set was breathtaking, a water landscape circular and moving (which lead to a hilarious incident when Juliet's bed fell into the fathoms below and the show had to be stopped in the middle, quite wonderful fun!) with various bridges guiding the story's way. Starring Lauren Ambrose as Juliet (and many other wonderful people whose names I do not know off the top of my head) it was probably the best production of R and J I have ever seen. Something about the way the leads were played was just so YOUNG and not in a hurrah I am skipping and have a teddy bear young but I am falling recklessly and passionately and irrationally into love young. And, instead of coming off as TRUE LOVE, it presented itself as a sort of wonderful depiction of that very first time when all bets are off and you'd do anything to be a glove upon that hand.

Here are my tips for the show!

Get tickets Tue- Sun, they are given out at 1pm at the Delacorte in Central Park (near 81st street and west entrance) and at the Public theater at 425 Lafayette just below astor place. They are also distributed throughout the boroughs but you'll have to find that on your own! I would say def get there by 9 if you'd like decent tickets but on other days you can get there much later and still snag a seat! Just beware of the weather, if it rains and the show is canceled you're out of luck! Definitely bring a pillow and a novel and LAYERS. I went in between a sweatshirt freezing to a bikini boiling (and tanning!) throughout the day. They say you all have to arrive at the same time, which is nice for the line but they don't REALLY start monitoring until around 10. That's all my advice, remember 2 tickets per person so if you have an extra give me a call!!!

BRYANT PARK MOVIES!

Does this even need an explination? A perennial favorite of mine, the bryant park films offers free movies on Monday nights to all those with a blanket and a sense of patience! The lawn officially opens at 5pm for viewing the movie (which starts sometime between 8 30- 9 30 depening on sundown) with a race for the best space. Bring a large blanket (potluck picnics are also a favorite) and elbow your way to the front of the masses before the countdown to ensure a great spot! Featuring old time classic movies, it is THE best way to start off the workweek.

Bryant park is located at 40-42 streets between 5th and 6th.

So it's not exactly the cheapest drink around but I just HAD to share my experience with Sugarcane, the branch off lounge of next door's Sushi-Samba. After dragging our feet around lower Manhattan in search of a strong drink a girl on a stipend could afford our group finally descended upon this swanky dark lounge next door to the Japanese-Brazilian fusion restaurant. After being scooted to the back (front tables are reserved for eating-only) we scoured the menu until Zach found just what we were looking for, the cocktail tree. (disclaimer: it may be called something else but you'll find it on the menu). At the end of a page long listing of delicious cocktails, the tree offers 12 mini cocktails in splendid little glasses, hanging from a metal tree, complete with a fruit garnish. You can chose any three cocktails you like and receive four of each drink (I HIGHLY recommend the lemon one with peach and guava!). Split between 6 friends we each got 2 drinks, each spent only 10 bucks (it's 60 for the tree) and each definitely got a little tipsy. Enjoy!

I took my own advice this morning and enjoyed breakfast at incredible atlas before heading to the 6 and B garden (see previous posts) to enjoy an afternoon of reading and relaxation. To my dismay, however, 6 and B did not open til 1 and it was 12 30 and my current read, Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell, weighs approximately 30 pounds! What's a girl to do? Discover another garden right near by!

On 6th street between avenue A and B lies "The Creative Little Garden". Fitting into the space of a townhouse or two, this joyful little area hosts a variety of benches and tables, little design elements and sculptures, small areas of flowers and a birdbath with one VERY bold blue jay. Sitting underneath a towering tree, hearing birds chirp around me in this quiet sanctuary was exactly the sort of respite I was looking for within which to indulge my novel side. Go immediately, I say, just don't tell EVERYONE you know, at least not while I'm there!

Ladies and Gentlemen, I believe I have found it, the cheapest Manicure/ Pedicure on the little island of Manhattan at a mere 17 bucks! (plus tax, reads the sign, which comes to 18). I went into Kim's Nail today by luck as I was headed to the L train and realized I had my "emergency" $20 in my wallet to spare because, well, when you see a deal like this it's what you're "emergency" $20 is for! It's a full pedicure and manicure complete with mini though chill inspiring hand and foot massages, buffing and your choice of color. Ask for the older guy who is beyond amazing and light-handed in his work and you won't be disappointed, plus, it's 18 bucks!!!

Just wanted to let you know about a sample sale going on the next three days, it's Lilla P. and they have really really great solid colored items at these sales, think T's and long sleeve Henley's. I've been to three and have never spent more than 40 for a boatload of items and have never left disappointed. They often have five dollar bins (go digging for the good stuff) and their clothes are always great quality, light and fun, fantastic for summer, work and play!

Keeping with the food events, next up is the Taste of Times Square the annual event featuring food samplers from an array of vendors near the area that IS. (You can define what "is" means, tourist hell? Center of theater world? Center of the entire world? It's up to you). Taking place on west 46th between Broadway and 9th ave, over 50 food vendors including Carmine's and Havana Central will be selling incredible dishes while street performers and free swing lessons provide you with entertainment on the historic restaurant row! Food tickets go on sale starting at 3 for a dollar each which you can then redeem for food at the booths. The food is served 5- 8 30 though your recommended to get there early for more selection because, well, it's times square and will be crowded!

The event takes place Monday, June 11.

First off, sorry about the lack of posts. Seems the wireless I steal from has been malfunctioning, leaving me sad and on my lonesome with no internet connection (luckily I am in the midst of Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell, Brilliant piece of work, I recommend it, but I digress).

While two blocks from my apartment at this very moment are Leo Dicaprio and Kate Winslet filming their new movie, I had an even BIGGER star encounter today that I had to share with you all. In case you haven't noticed, I am quite the broadway junkie. I'm obsessed with the shows, the stars, the music and haven't shut up about spring awakening since I first saw it in December, just ask Anthony. Being a new yorker (and a regular viewer of seinfeld) I've heard of the famed Broadway summer softball league where cast, crew and tech of shows battle it out for the jockiest of the theatre dorks. Long have I wished to happen upon a game, to see a star walking by, John Gallagher Jr. (soon to be TONY winner) with a bat poised casually over his shoulder (shit, I digress again!) but never did I believe I'd actually find it. WELL my friends, today I was sitting at Columbus circle taking lunch break from a conference with my new friend Melissa when a woman walking her dog wearing a Grey Gardens shirt walked by. Now this was not your ordinary Gray Gardens shirt, no no no, it was a three quarter length sleeve shirt with buttons. AKA, a baseball shirt. I thought I hallucinated and moved on until a similarly dressed woman walked by, this time with a shirt emblazoned with WICKED across the front. Melissa, I say, we have to follow her, I think she's going to the broadway summer softball league!

I literally thought I had died and gone to heaven. Laid out before my very eyes were SIX, SIX fields full of my favorite broadway shows! Company v Frost/ Nixon, Merry Poppins versus Legally Blonde. Ladies and Gentlemen, I was overcome with joy! THEN I spent about 20 minutes talking to the guy who plays Zazu from the Lion King getting the details, turns out games are every Thursday in the park (ask for the baseball fields closest to columbus circle) they start at 11 and go to around 3. When I inquired to the whereabouts of spring awakening, he said they already played as the newer shows tend to go on the fields earlier because they "supposedly" (his words) have less rehearsals. Well my friends, if you are bored on a Thursday and looking for the perfect harmony of music, theater and the all american past time, look no further than central park. I may call in sick and be there too!

Hosted by Human Giant's Aziz Ansari, the show features various NYC comics ("top comics" according to the website) and special guests and short videos. I went awhile ago and it was like the PIT, funny and amusing but in the end, I was glad I wasn't paying a whole ton. But hey, someone wants to make me laugh? For free? and it's within walking distance to pinkberry? Dude, I'm THERE (sometimes).

Wednesday night comedy at the PIT

Finally! Something to do on a WEDNESDAY night! Ben and I, frequenters of the amazing ASSSSCAT 3000, found ourself bored last Wednesday night and in need of a laugh. Luckily the People's Improv Theater (aka The Pit) hosts a comedy palooza on Wednesday nights to suit our comic needs. At 7 there's a one man show followed by four in-house improv teams, two at 8 and two more at 9 30, lastly there's something called the impodrome at 11. Now there are definitely some positives about this place, one being you don't have to show up 2 hours in advance to get tickets (a mere 15 minutes seemed to do for the 8pm show which ben and I frequented) and the theater is tiny meaning that you can see and hear all the action with ease. But, well, there was just something MISSING. The two groups we saw at 8 (Big Black Cat and Fancy Dragon) were, well, just less than a sixteenth of a hair off but it made a difference. Don't get me wrong, there were times that I laughed and it was well worth an hour of free time, but there was something which didn't catch me falling off my seat even after I've waited 2 hours in line for a partial view lack of hearing side seat at UCBT. In the end, their attempts at being un-PC made even Ben uncomfortable (which I thought was impossible) and their goofier spoofed fell short. Worth the buck donation but Sunday nights will continue to rule my guttural laugh in comedy land.

Shakespeare on the Run!

Welcome to the beginning of summer and the plethora of events occurring right in NYC which are outdoors, fun, entertaining and best of all free! I'll kick off June with my absolute most favorite of events, Shakespeare on the Run brought to you by The New York Classical Theatre.
This twist on Shakespeare summer loving is that you get to move through Central Park throughout the show! While the story begins at 103rd street and central park west (take the C to 103) right inside the park, you run after actors as they show progresses (ok ok, not actual running but you can make it into a sport by dodging trees and bikers!). They actors use the scenery of the park well, are dressed in full period costume and incorporate flashlights as dusk settles. PLUS it's a great introduction to classical theater for kids as you can move around the park! grab some Bombay Frankie's before the show and bring a blanket that you can easily scoop up and move along!

Now playing through June 24th, Love's Labour's Lost, Thu through Sunday at 7pm.

So yesterday Bea, Roma, Ethan and Ben and I trekked over to the Bronx zoo planning on spending massive amounts of money merely to oogle wild creatures in their own habitat (we probably could have just gone to the village but what can you do). It was to our surprise and delight that when purchasing tickets with our Bank of America cards, we got two free tickets each! Crazy right? I did some research and it turns out that May is free museum month with your BOA card (trust me though, this isn't an advertisement, I'm pissed that the bank never filled me in on this deal) turns out that for the next four days (as it ends in May) us New Yorkers with the cards can get 2 free admission tickets to places like the New York Aquarium, Moma, and the Whitney. Today will be devoted to two email listserves that NYC-ers in search of bargains and deals, even free booze, must be a part of. The first is Daily Candy. Serving up daily offerings of where to be (events) and where to shop (sales) around the city this mass mailing is good for someone who wants to know the up to the day events of our shining city. There really is no focus on the cheap, however, so aside from the sales keep in mind that some of these NY events come attached with NY prices.

Next however is My Open Bar.com
which provides the cheap alcoholic in all of us a daily fix of events that offer an open bar with or without a cover, for the evening. Often these actually coincide with neat events, (avant garde maze openings anyone?), and are sometimes centered around one drink, and best of all, once you're in the door it's F.R.E.E.

Roti Rolls at Bombay Frankie's

Let me first say that I was BOMBARDED by mags, newsletters and events this afternoon all guiding me towards the free and cheap splendid events taking place throughout the city this summer. Most everything kicks off in June so I'll start actually writing about them next week but my piece of advice is to get done with all that "I've wanted to do this for so long but haven't yet" "stuff" that needs to occur before the craziness of summer sets in and you're busy up to your ears with events!

While you're out and about, however, check out upper west side favorite spot of mine, Bombay Frankie's! Located on Amsterdam at 109th street, this little haven of a street store serves up Roti Rolls, basically a sort of burrito stuffed full with Indian food. Ranging from $2.75 (for spiced potatoes and chick peas) to $6.00 (for the shrimp variety) apiece them mega-sandwiches offer the perfect meal to go as you check out central park on 110th or cruise Columbia's gorgeous campus on 116th. With special deals if you buy two (seven bucks gets you two chicken malai rolls) and mango lassi's in the fridge, there's nothing more likely to get way up on the west side!

Oh yea, and if you're lucky enough to live nearby, they offer free delivery until midnight on orders 12 bucks or over, 212-666-1500.

Normally I don't even let my pinkie toe step foot into any of the oh so fancy meatpacking district stores for fear I'll leave in a mess of tears and shame. Not tomorrow my friends! Uber-sleek designer, Rubin Chapelle, is making MONSTROUS price cuts on the oh so fabulous Italian duds in their meatpacking district store. Examples include Italian Cotton Sweatshirts for 30 instead of 220 and miniskirts for 45 compared to 290. Me Likey!

Meatpacking District Design Week!

Hello my loves! I'm so sorry to have missed an entire week of NYC goodness with all of you but I was off burning myself to a crisp in sunny Florida. Luckily, I've made it back in time to catch the tail end of the the Meatpacking District's Design Week! (It's FREE!) Located in various venues throughout the district this week promises avant garde fashion, furniture and even, everyone's secret fantasy since watching those randy children in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, scented wallpaper (ok you can't lick it but close enough!) Today is the last day so pop yourself over to Bodum Cafe, 413 west 14th Street by 9th avenue and grab a free coffee while you scope out the guide to the weekend's (well now it's day's) festivities!

Best Day Ever (rice balls, pinkberry and modern art oh my!)

Just walked in from spending one of the best NYC days ever (though I tend to have a lot of those) with my bud Aaron. It's Friday night and if you're looking for an all star line up of cheap yet amazing fun (it's date night too) then you've gotta check out the below.

1. Dinner (or lunch or bfast) at Oms/b. Located on 45th street between Lex and 3rd (take 456 to Grand Central) this little haven of a shop offers up dozens of rice balls ranging from crab salad to salmon roe to ume plum, these mounds of delight are healthy, refreshing and varied, and, get this, cheap! Aaron and I each got the A box where you can chose any three balls of your liking plus a soup for 7 50. If you're willing to let them chose you get 3 balls a soup and an appetizer for 6.50, a heck of a deal and lunch! The plum was a bit too sour for me but I almost died when I bit into the flavorful eel (not the baked one the one with rice and eel on top) and the light crab salad. Heaven.

Next, take a 15 minute walk up to 53rd between 5th and 6th and check out Moma. (Free on Fridays 4-8) This weekend is the last you can check out inquisitive photography by Jeff Wall and the Comic Abstractions closes on the 11th but my favorite current exhibit by far is the installation Projects 85: Dan Perjovschi. Featuring humorous and provocative sketch drawings taking up three floors of wall space, and creeping around the sides, this piece offers not only comic respite but food for thought. Lay back on the plush black benches (I literally lay on them for about 15 minutes dissolving into laughter) and enjoy! The sculpture garden outside is great too, just don't run or spin through the giant metallic pieces winding around the space, the security gaurds don't like it too much :)

Last but not least take another walk to 32nd between 5th and 6th for
3. Pinkberry dessert! Hard to describe (like tart yogurt?) but beyond addictive, these bowls of deliciousness might be more than the regular cost of ice cream (5.95 for a medium with three toppings) but you'll never get over the incredibleness they can contain on a hot muggy day (or any day infact). Ask for it with rice cakes, (a chewy substance they hide below the counter so it's not on display for the mere mortals), raspberries and chocolate chips and it's the perfect end to the PERFECT NYC day.

Hello loves!

1) Sorry it's been a few days, I would say it was finals week but clearly that is not an excuse!
2) I have recently caught wind of another great event happening this Saturday; Free Jazz! The Jazz center at Lincoln Center's Middle School Jazz academy, which offers scholarships for 14 students in 4 of the five boroughs, is having a free concert at the Lincoln Center's Frederick P. Rose Hall on Broadway and 60th street at both 1 and 3pm. Sure to blow your mind, it just may be a tinch inspirational too. And who doesn't love summer jazz, for FREE?!

"Garage Sale" on Perry Street

How I love this time of the year, the tulips are out the birds are singing and rich west village people are getting rid of their things for cheap cheap cheap! This Saturday hosts a day long (10-6) street long (on Perry between 4th and Bleecker) street garage sale sure to host some goodies. I've been to many similar events and have found such niceties such as a hardback copy of Freakonomics for 2 bucks and a large comfy 100 percent cashmere sweater for 7. It's always a good place to check out antiques and jewelry and as the weather is supposed to be beautiful, it's just a wonderful way to spend an afternoon! See you rummaging through the stands! oh and rain date is sunday!

Samosa! Dosa!

first off, I know a lot lately has been in the west village! I swear I will branch out more once the summer comes and I am finally able to leave the library. That said, the village does have some of the greatest cheap eats in the world including my personal favorite Manhattan Cart- THE DOSA STAND!

Usually parked out on Washington Square Park on west 4th by Sullivan from around 11 to 5ish, usually with a line during peak hours, this guy serves up some of the tastiest quick eats to go NYC has to offer. All vegan and all amazing, the dosa's which I can barely explain but it's a crepe type circle of yumminess stuffed with potatoes, onions, veggies, etc. They range from 3-6 dollars and come with a small (spicy) soup and incredible coconut (sort of, it's better than this but my pallet is not sophisticated enough to explain it) sauce. Skip the lines and grab a samosa or veggie roll for a buck each from the window in front. The samosa's are the best I've had, crunchy outside with an amazingly jam packed middle of flavor and food, and the sauces are divine. Grab a seat in nearby Washington square park and people watch for the afternoon and call it a day.

POP! kA-pOW! Slam! STREB!

Finally I was able to soak in one of, I believe the most innovative and heart pumping shows in NYC, STREB! A "modern dance" group around since 1985, Streb's pieces take the form of pop action where members through themselves from incredible heights, slam themselves into planks of wood, run and tumble into and off of what can only be described as a giant hamster wheel and crash, bang, fall and amaze in their SLAM (Streb Lab for Action Mechanics) studio. While the place is always packed with kids I assure you this show is not only awe inspiring (see how far water can be flung and how many different ways to jump into a pool with splsh) and gasp inducing (dance between concrete blocks as they swing inches from your face anyone?) But also is beyond inspiring in showing what our bodies can take and in how many different ways they can take it. It just urges you to move and explore what can be done with yourself as well as we push the bounds of not only imagination, but ourselves.

Let's Go Ride a Bike

It is beyond gorgeous outside and a perfect day for a bike ride. While I own my own bike (which makes these offerings free if you do too!), I realize that many NYC-ites do not have the pleasure and thus would like to offer my two favorite spots to ride PLUS places nearby where you can rent bikes for an hour or the day!

The Hudson Bike Path:

Stretching all the way down from Battery Park to the upper west side, this gorgeous, river side path offers miles of flat, smooth road with fantastic views of the city. Hop on pretty much anywhere on the westside and enjoy!

Central Park:

I know it's been done but I love this loop, it's a workout (if your like me and don't bike all that often) on the hills but it feels amazing to glide down them while whizzing through the city's most wonderful offering.

The only bike rental place I can personally recommend is on the Upper East Side is Eastside Bicycles on Lexington and 88th which rents out bikes for around 8 bucks an hour and is right by the park.

Here's a good site though for many a place in Manhattan. Get off your butt and go on a ride!

Dining Fever, Cheap (ER) deals

The emphasis to this post is on the (er) of cheaper. This Dining Feve blog lists different deals taking place in mid- upscale restaurants around the city where you can get 10- 30 percent off of your meal by printing out their coupons and using special DiningFever codes. You can also search food based on type, dining style and location. Not so very cheap but it will definitely save you a few bucks on those nights you decide to break the bank!

6 and B, How I love thee

It's a gorgeous day and I'd like to honor my favorite community garden in all of NYC, 6 and B!
Located on avenue B and 6th street in the Lower East Side of Manhattan. It's a little fairy village with tumbling plants cascading over the narrow paths winding around the garden. Tiny little hideouts, a gazebo and one amazing sculpture of wood reaching 60 feet in the sky (though the hanging stuffed animals creep me out it's very whimsical in a return to childhood sort of way).

The garden is open on Saturdays and Sundays from 1-6 (and during other events) and boasts a wide array of free events ranging from sunrise yoga on Mondays at 7am to movie nights and artist photo showings in the summers. They also have a lot of events for kids, craft days, poetry workshops and book readings. Basically, it's a bit of heaven.

BURGER MANIA! (part 2)

For an early morning post it's quite remarkable that I am still craving a burger after describing last nights wonders but here it is. Burger post number two brings us to Corner Bistro a West Village institution on West 4th and Jane since before SJP moved into the hood. Expect crazy lines here as well and a sometimes demanding waiter but the burgers are mmm mm worth it and amazingly good. Greasy, hearty, with lots of crunchy little fries, plus 2 50 drinks and a full full bar make this place provide an extra kick in my step when I'm in need of oh so good oh so bad food. Check it out on a weekday afternoon and miss the long wait which I've encountered even on Wednesday nights (though nothing beats the hour plus long wait we encountered on a friday!) Come to think of it, anyone else think these burger places are so good because you spend so long waiting for one that a beat up slab of ANYTHING would be heaven? Nahhhh.....

CHEAP DATE: Take him/her to magnolia's bakery about five minutes away on Bleecker and 11th. Another village institution (though SJP might have helped this one) you'll think the people in line (again, avoid late nights) are crazy! Until you have a chocolate chocolate masterpiece that is.

BURGER MANIA! (part one)

I, for one, am on the quest for the perfect burger. The kind that crunches when you take that first bite but melts in your mouth as you sink in to the delicious meat. Well, burgers just don't come cheap in this city and I've learned to deal with it (anyone finding something remotely decent under 5 wins a prize) BUT you've got to try out the ridiculous burger place at Le Parker Meridien. Enter the hotel on 57th between 6th and 7th aves and you find yourself in a gorgeous marble hall decked with sky high mirrors. Take a discreet right as you enter and find yourself inching towards velvet drapes concealing what appears to be a narrow hallway. Turn down the dark passage and see a single neon blinking burger and then, my friends, you have entered heaven and by heaven I mean a little dive joint jam packed with food, fries and a small but select group of new yorkers who know the secret. Cheeseburgers (with all the fixins!) cost you seven bucks, they're not huge but grab some fries and a lemonade and you're still under 12. Be sure to know what you want by the time you get to the counter, however, because it's kind of a soup nazi experience which must be seen to be believed. These mouthfuls of delight soak the brown paper bag in grease and you basically have to risk death to find a spot, not to mention a wait in lines but let's face it, it's these experiences we THRIVE for in this city. So live it up loves, it's mm mmm good.

Cheap Date! (Cocoa and Piers edition!)

In light of my friends recent non-relationship, I would like to start a series of quick cheap dates that you, my lovely readers, can partake in. Today is an ode to the Piers on the Hudson, starting down by Wall street and stretching up until 20th or so, these piers are incredible places to walk, people watch, dog watch, and overall enjoy a fantastic day! Over the summer these piers host a number of events like fishing, movies and dancing but everyday they are a great place to chill and get to know that special someone. (or cartwheel on the impeccable lawns and turf fields, your choice).

Before heading out to these oasis' of delight pick up some hot chocolate at the incredible 11th street cafe between Greenwich and Washington streets just a block and a half from the piers themselves. (cross over on 11th street) (You know it's good when they don't even have a website). Honestly, the hot chocolate here is so good I literally stopped mid step every time I took a sip. Though the counter people can sometimes be pretentious (it is the west village after all) the hot cocoa is beyond incredible, ask for it with whipped cream and a little caramel drizzle and it's to die for. The iced coffee is incredible as well, full and actually tasting of coffee you feel you're sucking straight from the beans. Live, love and enjoy.

Mmm mmm Do I love my quick book fixes! There really isn't anything better than taking a break from this crazy city and checking out for a while in a fantastic novel. While this city does boast some incredible local bookstores (Three Lives in Co is a personal favorite, their recommendations are beyond belief!) we could always use a cheaper alternatives. Luckily, as usual, being in the city allows for a way to indulge your mind AND save your wallet. The only drawback is you won't necessarily find every book you want here BUT you will earn your bang for your buck! See my favorite picks below!

1) Your (or my) local stand on the street!
Right around washington square are a number of wonderful guys with an actual GREAT solution of books! My favorite is a little one or two table stand on West fourth street just east of Washington Square park. This guy has AMAZING selections (recent purchases include The Handmaid's Tale (3 bucks), Like Water for Chocolate (5 bucks) and The Amazing Adventures of Cavelier and Clay (7 bucks).
Another great alternative is the line of stands on 6th ave between 18th and 21st streets. These you might have to dig through a bit more. Recent buys include Bel Canto (4 bucks) and How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents (4 bucks)/

2) The Strand
On the corner of 12th and Broadway and boasting the infamous 18 miles of books (done by the shelf space). This store is not only surrounded by a buck a book shelves but boasts a wide array of VERY marked down books (recent buys include Assassination Vacation for 4.75 and Memories of My Melancholy Whores for 6ish). TONS and TONS of books with a wide arrange of selections including many best sellers and top reads, this is a place not just to buy a book but spend an afternoon.

3) HousingWorks Used Book Cafe
On Crosby by Broadway, this place not only boasts knowledgeable staff, a great cafe, fantastic speakers (including a children's book on Pot and the makers of the white rapper show which I happened upon randomly one day as I perused the shelves) and is an overall laid back place to read (recent purchases include The Time Traveler's Wife, 7 bucks) , but you can feel good about your purchases too! As all the books are donated, 100 percent of all proceeds go to Housing Works, a non for profit which provides housing, health care, job training, advocacy and other services to homeless New Yorkers living with AIDS. Now THAT'S food for thought! Plus, do good and volunteer a few of your hours with the fantastic knowledgeable staff at the store!

Study (or life) break! Milk and Cookies!

The library sucks, studying sucks, exams suck, work sucks (sound like a familiar tune in your head?) Well get ready to bust out into cartwheels because today's topic of conversation discusses the sweetest of all sweet shops.... MILK AND COOKIES!

Boasting probably the best cookies in Manhattan, a warm atmosphere, chalk tables to draw on and boisterous funny bakers, Milk and Cookies is my number one choice for the perfect study break. Not only are their cookies divine (my favorites are the chocolate chip JAM packed with chips and the chocolate mint chip, dark chocolate with mint chips) and served with a glass of milk, but they'll also make ice cream sandwiches with your choice of cookies/ gelato and have incredible brownies and sundaes! They'll also make your own dozen or sell cookie dough OR deliver cookies to that poor little blogger so weighed down with finals (hint hint). All in all, the perfect place for a mid study/ life slump treat! A glass of milk and two cookies will set you back four bucks, but it's worth it, trust me!

Milk and Cookies is located on Commerce Street (right under Bleecker) between 7th Ave and Bedford. Hop on the 1 to Christopher and you're there!

Alright, I waited an entire week before I GUSHED about my new favorite Broadway musical....

SPRING AWAKENING!

I think it now goes down as my most-frequented NYC cheap event as I have been a whopping four times (beating out Rent in my Bway count) and have, honestly, thought I enjoy it more and more each time. Not only is it fresh and provides some amazing tunes (it's all I listen to in finals mode) but the cast is young, the choreography is modern and the stories, while jolted from time to time, are compelling.

About teenage rebellion and SEX this show brings us back to 1891 Germany (when the original play was written) where teens are suppressed, molested, horny, curious and pissed (when are they not?) The information is limited and their bodies are raring. There are many parts which could be done better (the use of a homosexual relationship as comic relief, the taking out of the original clear date rape scene etc), there are still parts more honest than most plays I have seen and it's FRESH. To be honest, I wasn't overwhelmed the first time but after I went home I found the songs permeating through my mind (see a music video here) and I felt compelled to go back. Second time was the charm, third and forth too. STAY AFTER and be a theater nerd and chat with the amazingly nice and down to earth cast and become addicted.

For 26.25 student tickets bring ID and CASH to the theater on 49th between Broadway and 8th. Box office opens 10am M-S and noon on Sundays. Get there a good two hours beforehand as they reserve student seats for every show but it is v, popular. OH! and if you get "partial view" seats, ask for ones on audience right, you'll miss less that way.

just GO, seriously, actually go TWICE (it's WAYYY better times two, or at least learn the songs before hand (they're on itunes).

Icey Presidents? Frost/Nixon

Today's entry will be short and sweet. I've mentioned it before but now I have supreme backup from my bible, the New York Times.

Go see FROST/NIXON! An amazing take on the tv interviews which basically got Nixon to admit his guilt featuring what I think is the best acting since I saw Meryl Streep in Mother Courage last summer. Minus a few made up facts I thought it was a wonderful depiction of a crazy time. I didn't want this gem of a play to end and was utterly delighted at the end.

But don't take my word for it, read the NYT review!

And of course, there are cheap student tickets "when available". We got front row center seats by showing up half an hour before the box office opened. (Though you may need to get there earlier now it's received rave reviews from practically all the major news sources). Tkts are 26.25 per person bring cash and your school id. Two tickets per person, box office is located at on 45th street between Broadway and 8th.

Go! seriously! NOW!

Jiaozi jiaozi jiaozi! (dumplings!)

First the New Yorker, then TONY and now, I, L.A. Burke shall sing the praises of

THE DUMPLING HOUSE!

Probably my favorite and most -frequented restaurant of Manhattan, this beyond tiny shop (think half the size of Magnolia's) is home to some of the most delicious dumplings this side of Beijing. and trust me, if there is one thing I know it's my dumplings. These suckers come at five for a buck in the fried pork variety and while there are many other similar places none has found quite as near and dear a place in my heart. Here goes the list.

1) The EXPERIENCE is unbeatable. There's nothing that can bring me back to China more than small crowded spaces with shouting people who refuse to line up and who are dying for a snack. Forgo the line that draws near the door and elbow your way into a spot at the counter.
2) The SANDWICHES. Otherwise known as "niu rou bing" or sesame pancake with beef (or tuna, I like beef though!) are piping hot fluffy mounds of sesame bread goodness stuffed with beef, carrots, cilantro and a great sauce, all for a buck fifty.
3) The FROZEN DUMPLINGS are to die for, seriously I bought a bag of the veggie ones to get me through finals (five bucks for 25) and ate the entire thing in one night. Ok, I ate 16 but still, that's a lot. Hands down the best veggie dumplings in the entire city, as if the pork ones aren't enough. And beat that "vegetarians eat cheaper" fallacy and buy 30 frozen pork ones for 5 as well.

Basically, go , eat and enjoy. You'll quite possibly have one of the best meals that 3.75 can buy (five pork fried dumplings = $1, beef sesame sandwich = $1.50, peach snapple iced tea= $1.25)

Where: On Eldridge by Broome Street, look for the big red sign. You'll only find seats if you're struck by the grace of God so take your goodies down a few blocks west on Broome and stake out the picnic tables in the park while watching intramural soccer.

As I sit here procrastinating from studying and with a new sunburn on my back, I realize how amazing it is to be out of doors and running around without a care in the world. This, my friends, is a post-ode to running around on grass barefoot, wide open spaces and fresh blue air.

Not in New York City you say! Wrong! Wrong wrong!

Today I experienced what was perhaps the most satisfying morning of my life at the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens which I have now mentioned in this not even one week old post THREE TIMES. These gardens are not only free on Tuesdays and Saturdays from 10am- noon (except on holidays/ festivals like next Saturdays cherry blossom viewing) but offer wide expanse of spaces in which to frolick, run, and do piggy back races! The cherry blossoms were gorgeous and the mood was perfect in which to celebrate this over 70 degree day!

Now, here are some issues with said park. You are not allowed food (rat problem) blankets (oxygen problem) sport activities aka Frisbees (who knows what problem) or, as Ethan or Ben put it, Mirth. No worries though, get there early enough to stake out a spot at cherry lane and eat your packed lunch (though the cafe's prices were reasonable I am told by my paying friends) when the guards aren't looking, same to frisbee. If you would like a code name to shout out when you see a 'Curity (as Roma called him) guard, you can borrow our code word "Jake" and call it a day. The picture is us playing frisbee at Cherry lane shortly before getting busted.

There are other less-known places to visit in the boroughs, however and so far my favorite has got to be the Alley Pond Environmental Center. While it takes nearly a good two hours to get to this haven from the city (though I was with an 8 year old and we were, I believe, stuck on a train that stopped for a large chunk of time, so, come to think of it, that may be wildly inaccurate, but still it's FAR), this place boasts over 635 acres of woodlands, marshes, and trails which are beyond gorgeous and that's coming from a New England gal. The paths are almost mystical as they wind around bamboo trees and pass by cranes and you can't imagine being farther from the city. My companion and I barely saw anyone else there the entire day and the visitors center boasts a fantastic mini-zoo (v mini mind you) with rabbits and chinchilla's and the like and the workers were all too happy to take the critters out of the cages and let us pet them. For anyone seeking refuge from the city, this is the place to be and guess what? It's FREE. Always. AMAZING!

It's in Queens but the website will do a MUCH better job of explaining how to get there. Just put on some sneakers, pack a book and lunch and go.

Raise your glass (and IQ!)

Sorry for the late in the day post and for the fact that this will be short but finals time is in the air and I, for one, am in need of a drink and free ones are even better!

Every Sunday night at Tortilla Flats there is a weekly game of what is quite possibly my favorite drinking sport of all time, that's right it's TRIVIA NIGHT!

Starting at around seven and taking place around every half hour Tortilla flats hosts a knock-out game of trivia where questions, mainly from trivial pursuit, are read aloud as patrons scream out the answer. First person to get each question right gets a free shot of fantastic delicious tequila, lime included. I LOOOVEEEE trivia night and this bar makes it beyond fun as you can scream out anything you like and everyone gets in on the action. The food is quite delicious (ranging from 8-15 dollars for an entree) and the margaritas (35-50 pitchers) are tasty. Best of all, if you've got the brains the tequila is FREE. Only problem is the more you win the less likely you may be to ever learn anything again!

Hello hello again!

While it is gray and gloomy outside I can just feel spring ready to burst behind the clouds and we all know what that means, time for spring clothes! Hurrah for sundresses and skirts and shorts and halters, perfect for what may be the last summer at coney island ever and the only things we can possibly wear to survive Manhattan's blistering summers.

Ahhhh, if only clothes weren't so expensive, right?
Wrong! What you have to realize is that people in Manhattan are clothes crazy trend-fiends who buy clothes only to wear them once and then want to get rid of them by making a quick buck. That is where you, my dear friends enter and here are some secrets to finding the best, cheapest Hand-me-UP clothes around, plus two events ongoing this weekend to get your closet started.

First off, while you all probably know the site you might be lacking in understand it can be good for more than one night stands and the ever-allusive "missed connections." That's right, it's

Craigslist!

Just go under the "for sale" section and search for clothes under garage sales (yes yes they have them in manhattan, it's like a tag sale/ yard sale/ please buy my shit so I have more room in my miniscule closet sale). I've been to at least three of the events and have found wonderful pieces in each INCLUDING two pairs of citizen jeans already hemmed for my height for 10 bucks a pop and an incredible shirt dress for only 5. Beat THAT forever 21! (who i love as well, actually, go there too!) As much as I love other vintage stores they can get a wee bit pricey and often it's more of a fun experience then a hardcore cheap shopping haven.

So hurrah for craigslist!

Ok, now onto THIS WEEKEND. Granted, I usually only post things here that I have attended but these events look too good to pass up (thanks Time Out New York for cluing me in, what would I do without you?)

on SATURDAY and in celebration of earth day secondhand store Buffalo Exchange is hosting a ONE DOLLAR (that's right $1!!!) "bonanza" where all proceeds will benefit Center for Environmental Health.

They also hold "DIY workshops" (also FREE) on how to alter your clothing to suit your fashion needs. Best part is, you can take home whatever you can carry!

While my mood is not one of delight today given the recent events at VT and the SCOTUS ban of partial birth abortion, the parade of free fun things in the city must go on!

The taste of Chinatown is this Saturday, April 21st from 12-6pm!

I went over the summer and while it was jam-packed it was also uber fun and wicked tasty (yes yes I am from MA). Aside from the wonderfully cheap tasting plates of 1-2 dollars (Though be prepared to wait upwards of half an hour if you want peking duck at this price!) there are performances and fortune cookie writing contest!

If you're an NYU student you can also VOLUNTEER for this event getting a free t-shirt and five dollar food coupon. Helping out + free stuff = amazing!!!

Hello my loves!

This posting will mark the beginning of my daily posts as well. If you click on the subject at the bottom right of this post it should say comedy and Sunday. Now, if you click on Sunday you will be transported to a world of all the amazing wonderful incredible free and cheap events which happen every Sunday in our dear city (or I'll write when). True, for now I have only started Sundays and only have this one event but in the future I dream of bringing many many events for you each and every day of the week!

Ok, on to assssssscat3000!

Assscat (the number of s's you use is debatable I swear) is an improv comedy group at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater. While I love many of the groups this theater hosts there are a number of things which make assscat near and dear in my heart.

1) Assscat often hosts a number of improv allstars in the city. I've seen it hosted a number of times by Amy Poehler who is beyond hilarious despite appearing in Blades of Glory, and it always boasts a line up of SNL, Best Week Ever and the Daily Show/ Colbert report regulars.

2) The show is FREE (but bring a few bucks for the bucket of truth at the end, it's kinda scary!) Which makes it all the more amazing!

Here's the rundown:

What: Assscat 3000 improv comedy
Where: UCBT on 26th between 8th and 9th avenues (take ACE to 23rd!)
When: Sunday nights at 9 30, tickets are handed out at 8 15

A Lesson in free digs

Well friends, today I learned a very sad lesson in free stuff and defeat....

As many of you know today was free cone day at Ben and Jerrys, all day long my tastebuds longed for the sweet stickiness which would only be enhanced by the fact that I did absolutely nothing to deserve said wonderfulness. Due to a number of complications, including the fact that I don't like to indulge in pure sugar before three, it wasn't until it was 7 45 pm while I was sitting in my con law review session when I realized that i only had 15 minutes before my chance for free cones was up for an ENTIRE YEAR! I left class, tripping over five bags at 17 more dedicated law students then myself, threw on my coat and ran outside in the freezing rain, rounded Sullivan, took a left on Bleecker and readied myself for......

A BOARDED UP BUILDING! The Ben and Jerrys I had so lovingly frequented (ok, it was only once, and it was only because it's across the street from my favorite bar....but still!) was gone and good, possibly forever, and I had to return to con law back to the glaring eyes and clicking keyboards of gunners and the 14th amendments interpretations defeated, sad, and lonely with no free ice cream love.

My message to you dear friends is this, free things can be fickle in this crazy city, but we wouldn't want it any other way. Just check to make sure you know where you're going and that it actually exists before heading out for a free day of fun, otherwise you may miss it for another year......

Here's a list of museums in the city and the nights they have "pay as you wish" aka free days. Keep in mind that many museums are pay as you wish all the time (ie the Met, though the guards might stare you down if you don't give a buck or two) these are just the nights that museums allow you to go all out on your broke-ness. Talkin Broadway!

It basically has everything you need to know about getting cheap/ rush/ lottery/ standing room tickets for all broadway and many off broadway shows. Just click on the box under the show and they'll list whether they do rush/ student rush etc and what you need to bring. Call other off broadway theaters to see if they do rush, most do!

Hopefully after seeing shows I will eventually write back with tips about what time you need to get there/ how the seats were etc but here's what I know so far:

Spring Awakening: I would recommend getting there around 2 hours before the box office opens, seats vary but they save student seats for every show. Ask to sit on the audience L side if you are going to get restricted view because you won't miss as much as if you were sitting on the other side.

Frost/ Nixon: I saw this while it was in previews and LOVED IT. We got to the box office about 20 minutes before it opened and were the first ones in line (this may change though as the show actually get reviewed). Tickets were in the front row!

Avenue Q: front row seats!
Wicked: front row seats!
Hairspray: I was seated waaayyyyyy at the back,
Putnam: We were off to the side in a theater in the round but still saw mostly everything!

Everyone hates finding a new place to get their haircut or styled or now even colored, but I have found the place for free and actually quite good services!

Bumble and Bumble, which many of you may know from their product line, runs an education workshop on 13th street by 9th ave and everything they offer is free for models. You have to go to

and sign up to come to model call, where they assess you and, if you fit with what they are looking for an are willing to go for one of their styles, they'll sign you up! There are only a few hairstyle options for each gender but I've actually found them to be flexible within what they will do with your hair (in terms of length, bangs, layers, etc).

For styling you ALSO get 10 dollars to use towards any product and if you go enough times within 6 months they give you gift certificates to Itunes etc.

PLUS, all the stylists have to have had at least 2 years of professional experience in order to come to the school, I've found all my stylists to be very competant and have been pleased with all my cuts.

Hello fun and wonderful internet world.

I wanted to start this blog to keep track of all the wonderful, free and cheap, fun things to do in this city. As the summer approaches there is so much going on that it's hard to keep track of all the ways to entertain yourself so I decided to make this handy-dandy internet guide for my friends and virtual loved ones.
